The dollar continues to perform very well. This trend looks set to continue this week which will culminate with a speech on Friday by Federal Reserve Chair, Jay Powell on the economic outlook, economists at ING report.
Gold
Gold prices declined for the straight sixth session to hit their lowest in more than three weeks amid rising gloom for the safe-haven bullion.
A stronger dollar and expectations of more rate hikes from the US Federal Reserve to tame surging inflation weighs on the sentiments for the yellow metal. A 50-basis point rate hike is anticipated by the Fed in September.
Oil
Oil slumps on fears over economic slowdown, stronger dollar, Oil prices slumped on Monday, ending three days of gains, as investors were concerned aggressive U.S. interest rate hikes will weaken the global economy and dent fuel demand while a strengthening dollar also added to pressure.
Stocks
U.S. stock futures fell on Monday morning following a halt in the summer rally last week, as fears of aggressive interest rate hikes returned to Wall Street.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 317 points, or by 0.95%. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 1.13% and 1.44%, respectively.
On Friday, the S&P 500 closed down 1.29%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 292 points, or 0.86%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.01%.
Those moves come ahead of what could be a volatile week of trading on Wall Street. Investors are anticipating Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s latest comments on inflation at the central bank’s annual Jackson Hole economic symposium.
